Model 1888 “Trapdoor” Rifle, a.k.a. “Ramrod-Bayonet Model”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASpringfield produced several models of the “Trapdoor Springfields” in the late 19th century. They were an attempt to combine the bayonet and cleaning rod into a single unit, as previous bayonets were considered obsolete. The Model 1888 was a combination of several refinements from previous models and features a round rod bayonet design. Frequently seen during the Spanish American war carried by guard units. This particular piece is date marked 1892 on the stock with the serial number 544672. It is also marked with “G” designating its use in the Georgia National Guard. Its overall condition is excellent.
