This Naval Officer’s sword dates to the Spanish-American War. It has an ornately etched blade with the mark “I. Bernstein. Brooklyn, NY” above the hilt. The guard is decorated with oak leaves and stamped with “U.S.N.” and the grip is sting ray and brass wire. The scabbard is leather with brass ornamentation including a dolphin drag. It does however have two separations, one of which was taped in an attempt to repair it. The sword belonged to Howell C. Cooper and the blade is etched with his name. He was an assistant engineer and served from May 25th 1898 to March 1st 1899.
